We're not exactly sure what to make of this, but
LG's
BH200 combo HD DVD / Blu-ray player is currently listed on Circuit City's website for $799, which is about $100 cheaper than anywhere else and $200 cheaper than a certain blue competitor. It might well be a typo, of course (and probably is), but between Big Red's pre-Black Friday
price-chopping and our own fervent hopes for format peace, we're going to keep on dreaming until we hear otherwise.
Update: Yep, too good to be true -- it's back up to $999 now.
[Thanks, Mike L.]

When did engadget become slickdeals or fatwallet?
HineyWipe @ Oct 30th 2007 12:49PM
Until it reaches $299, ask me if I care.
Preston @ Oct 30th 2007 12:55PM
Do you care?
Charles @ Oct 30th 2007 1:56PM
He could care less :)
John B @ Oct 30th 2007 3:32PM
If he could care less, then it obviously has some priority. Now, if on the other hand he *couldn't* care less ... ;)
Scooter @ Oct 30th 2007 7:09PM
make that $199 and I'll wake up.
Charles @ Oct 30th 2007 7:26PM
John B, it was supposed to be a joke. He didn't seem to want to reveal how much he cared and wanted people to keep asking him, hence why I said he could care less - a statement which still reveals almost nothing about how much he cares.
Oh never mind.... I’ll get my coat.
adamzeit @ Oct 30th 2007 12:51PM
Not true...I was at BB over the weekend here on Long Island and they had this same device in-store for $ 799.....
tundraboy @ Oct 30th 2007 12:50PM
Oooh, down to $799. Now they'll be doubling total sales from 3 to 6.
JohnTitor @ Oct 30th 2007 1:32PM
hmm $800;
Xbox 360 Arcade + HD-DVD drive = $400
PlayStation 3 40GB = $400
Dave Skaggs @ Oct 30th 2007 1:48PM
Yes, but these are all one unit, that should be worth like $20 off. The fact that you could play games on the 360 and PS3 however, adds to the value...
Michael @ Oct 30th 2007 1:51PM
I'd actually rather have the dual format player than 2 game systems sitting on my entertainment system. Then again, I already own the 360 and actually play games on it, but I mean if I wasn't a gamer and didn't already own it.
My hope is that these players come down in price drastically and the format war comes to an end with both formats co-existing.
pepper @ Oct 30th 2007 2:28PM
or you could just buy the 40 gb ps3 for $400
and buy the cheap under $200 hd dvd player i've been hearing about.
$200+$400=$600
as you say $800 aint bad for both a 360 and ps3 but i wouldent buy a 360 without a hard drive. so if one were to go that route it would take another 100-180 to get a hard drive for it. equalling $900 to $980. which would still be a better deal than this thing.
scyber @ Oct 31st 2007 6:54AM
I bet the price of dual format players drops alot quicker than the price of the xBox & PS3.
Scooter @ Oct 30th 2007 7:16PM
presumably this dual drive does not have a noisy fan, which would make it competitive with the two game systems as a media player, even at this price.
However I would rather spend this sort of money on storage i.e. a sizeable NAS. Shiny disks are passée.
Jason @ Oct 30th 2007 1:54PM
I really hate this format war. It's insanely stupid. I don't care which format "wins", every consumer is losing. My money is staying in my pocket until this whole thing is resolved into a single industry format like DVD is currently.
kaydwu @ Oct 30th 2007 1:56PM
yea totally. xbox + ps3 ftw.
ugg.tryptophan @ Oct 30th 2007 2:18PM
COMBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
DT @ Oct 30th 2007 2:38PM
The problem with going the PS3/Xbox360+HDDVD route is that you don't have the best players of either format. When used just for hi-def discs, you get the most basic player features. What's great about this combo player is that it supports the high-end features from standalone players (HDMI 1.3, etc).
Brent @ Oct 30th 2007 4:42PM
PS3 is HDMI 1.3, and as far as added features both systems get free updates as features are added to disc. Example: New Menu Features for Blu-Disc. Anyway, both consoles are equal to anything else that has yet to be released. If you have kids, dont have kids but play games, or have company that wants to play games from time to time, and want to do some serious folding@home with the PS3 then purchase the 2 game consoles to kill 5 birds with one stone(PS3 Games, Blu-Ray, Folding@home 3 times more efficient than PC, Xbox 360, HD-DVD, and all 1080P if you get a 360 with an HDMI port). More than 5 depending if you consider a PS3s web browser as good as your PCs (which it isnt...).

i work at cc and the bh100 is listed in our system at 899 so it makes sense for the bh200 a newer model to be 100 dollars less....just remember the bh100 was priced at 1299 when it first came out. Samsung also has the bdup5000 coming out which is going to be priced similarly....i would wait for the sammy
Matt @ Oct 30th 2007 2:52PM
I'm not sure what to think of this when I can get a really decent HD-DVD player for $197. The Blu-ray side costs $602.00?
Oh, and the HD-DVD player comes with five free HD-DVD movies. That really casts a sharp light on things, if you ask me.
chop @ Oct 30th 2007 3:11PM
shows how much you know. bluray has also been offering 5 free bluray's with purchase of a bluray player/ps3 since before hd-dvd
John B @ Oct 30th 2007 3:38PM
Yes, but do you get the 5 free BR + 5 free HD-DVD by buying this combo player?
simon @ Oct 30th 2007 5:12PM
Same thing in Canada $798CDN

im waiting for the internal lg dual format drive to get off back order. A few sites were selling it for less than 280.00. pay 800.00, thats still ridiculous
LG GGC-H20L (back ordered everywhere)
Michael @ Oct 31st 2007 9:34AM
Must've been a typo, it's back up to $999.99
Someone mentioned it selling for CAD$798.97 (Canadian dollars) which equates to
USD$838.45 (US Dollars)
Too bad Future Shop doesn't ship to the United States and I don't have an HDTV anyhow :-p
